The Lilacs Pub & Food – logo and branding

This project was logo design, branding and adverts. The client is a local pub that underwent a major restoration project of the pre-existing pub that was there before. The local residents of the village had actually bought the property collectively making this whole venture possible. Therefore that was my main focus of the target audience. Not only are they to be the new patrons of the public house, but they literally have an interest in the pubs history, redevelopment and ownership. Understanding this was key to how I approached the project as I wanted to ensure the audience felt connected to what the new business would look like, while still paying homage to the previous existence of the once popular establishment.

The only guidelines I had for the logo was, ‘The old name of the pub, ‘The Lilacs’ is favoured’. It’s also worth mentioning that the meaning of ‘The Lilacs’ refers to a pair of lilac rabbits…. although both rabbits and Lilac flower had been depicted throughout the pub’s history. During the restoration and communication with the client, I had learned that rabbit images had been discovered beneath layers of plaster on the walls. This little find was enough to swing the ‘rabbit’ image into a full developing series of logo ideas.

After successful completion of the logo and a welcomed reception among the crowds in the newly packed out pub, I was busy making some adverts. These were in the form of an A5 sports day programme along with a 4m x 1m pitch-side AD board.
